Your resume is the tool that gets you in the door when applying for a job. Learn how to write a great CV and get tips and advice on what to include in your own personal marketing materials.

What do you mean by Resume/CV?

CV, short for Curriculum Vitae, is a document used to apply for a job. It allows you to summarize your education, skills and experience, allowing you to successfully sell your abilities to potential employers. In addition to your resume, employers often ask for a cover letter. In the United States and Canada, a resume is called a resume. These documents tend to be more concise and do not follow specific formatting rules.

How long should a CV be?

A standard UK CV should not exceed both sides of A4 size. Check out our sample chronological resumes for inspiration.
That said, one size doesn’t fit all. For example, a recent graduate or recent graduate with minimal experience may only need to use one side of A4. Although not used very often, a three-page CV can be essential for those in senior positions or those who have gained a lot of experience or have held a number of jobs within the last five to ten years. . For example, some medical or academic CVs may be longer depending on your experience. While it’s important to keep your resume brief, you should also avoid selling your experience short.
To save space, include only the key points from your training and experience. Stick to relevant information and don’t repeat what you said in your cover letter. If you’re having a hard time tweaking your resume, ask yourself if some of the information is selling you. If that doesn’t cut it. If it’s not relevant to the job you’re applying for, delete it and if it’s old details from ten years ago, summarize it.

What to include in a CV ?

Contact Details – Include your full name, home address, mobile phone number and email address. Your date of birth is irrelevant and unless you are applying for an acting or modeling job, you do not need to include a photo.

Profile – A resume profile is a concise statement that highlights your key attributes and helps you stand out from the crowd. Usually placed at the top of your CV, it selects a number of relevant achievements and skills, while also demonstrating your career goals. A good resume focuses on the industry you’re applying for, as your cover letter will be specific about the job. Keep your personal CV short and engaging – 100 words is the perfect length. Education – List and date all previous education, including qualifications. Put most recent first. Include degree type/grade and date. Mention specific modules only where relevant.

Work Experience – List your work experience in reverse date order, making sure that everything you mention is relevant to the job you are applying for. Include your job title, company name, length of time with the organization, and your key responsibilities. If you have a lot of relevant work experience, this section should come before the education level.

Skills and Achievements – This is where you talk about the foreign languages you speak and the computer software packages you can master. The key skills you list should be relevant to the position. Don’t exaggerate your abilities, as you will need to back up your assertions during the interview. If you have a lot of job-specific skills, it’s a good idea to create a skills-based resume.

Hobbies – ‘Social’, ‘going to the movies’ and ‘reading’ won’t get the recruiter’s attention. However, related interests can provide a more complete picture of who you are, as well as give you something to talk about in an interview. Examples include writing your own blog or community newsletter if you want to be a journalist, joining a theater group if you are looking to get into sales, and getting involved in climate change activism if you want to. work for the environment. If you don’t have any related interests or hobbies, skip this section.

References – You do not need to provide the names of the referees at this stage. You can say “references are available upon request,” but most employers will assume that’s the case, so if you’re running short on space, you can skip it.
